The story behind Tonic Notes and the companion we’re building for every musical journey.
Every week, my mum sat in the corner of my violin lesson with a notebook. She wrote down what my teacher said, circled the passages that needed work, and when I sat down to practice on Tuesday, she’d remind me of what my teacher wanted me to work on. She made sure every minute I practiced was focused on exactly the right things, not a moment wasted.
I didn’t understand until much later what she’d been doing. The lesson is where music is taught, but the week after is where it’s learned and internalized. A lesson is so rich in content that for most people, much of what a teacher says is gone by the next morning.
Because of my mum, I never lost a single lesson. She recorded my journey note for note. My mother and her notebook were the secret to any success I’ve achieved.
